Productivity in the European Union: a comparative study of industry (EU KLEMS)
Project start date: 2004
Project end date: 2008
Funding institution: Comisión Europea

The European Commission sponsors this project as part of the 6th Framework Program, in which the Ivie participates together with fourteen other European research centres, with the aim of analyzing productivity in the EU. The fundamental objective of the project was to create a database to facilitate international comparisons of economic growth, productivity, creation of employment, capital formation and technological change at industry level for all the member countries of the EU (EU 25 with the exception of Bulgaria and Romania) since 1970. Comparisons were also made with the United States, Japan, Australia and South Korea. The work was carried out in different phases:

  • Gathering data using the methodologies of national accounts and input-output analysis
  • Preparing use tables -internal, import and total- at basic prices for the period 1986-2000, at current prices and at prices for the previous year
  • Developing a flexible database structure and its implementation as official statistics at the end of the project
  • The database was presented in March 2008, and will be updated in March 2009

Numerous analyses have been carried out using this database.
