The aim of this report is to inform the wider public of the significant socio-economic contribution of the Valencian Public University System (SUPV) to the Valencian region. After two previous studies, presented in 2009 and 2013, this is the third report the Ivie produces commissioned by the five Valencian public universities (University of Valencia, Polytechnic University of Valencia, University of Alicante, Jaume I University and Miguel Hernández de Elche University).
Results reveal that the SUPV returns 2.6 euros to society for every euro invested, thus making clear its contribution to the region’s economic activity both in the short and long term. Furthermore, the study provides an overview of the trajectory of the university system, especially during the severe economic crisis, and concludes that these economic difficulties have not prevented many significant improvements in teaching and research. On the other hand, they have weakened and compromised the ability of universities to achieve academic results in relevant fields, as research lines have been interrupted, the rejuvenation of staff and the incorporation of new human capital have slowed down and the poor collaboration between University and firms has further weakened.
