The economic impact of Mercadona is not only limited to Spain, since it has recently expanded into Portugal. Since the opening of its first store in 2019 in Porto, it has been increasing its network of supermarkets in Portugal and now has 39 stores. In this regard, the aim of this study is to calculate the economic and fiscal impact in Portugal since the start of the initial investments and operating expenses through the end of 2022, and separately during the 2022 financial year. The objective is to estimate the impacts in terms of production, added value, employment and public revenues (fiscal impact) by using the input-output methodology based on the latest available input-output table for Portugal.
