Educational quality in Spain and its regions

Project start date: 2025
Project end date: 2026
Funding institution: Fundación Ramón Areces

The goal of this project is to examine  the circumstances of students in Spain and its regions who attain the highest levels of competencies, i.e., excellent students (high educational performance).

The following factors are analyzed in order to determine why the percentage of excellent students in Spain (6%) is lower than in the EU (8%):

  • Personal, family, school-related or environmental factors, as well as regional differences.
  • Relationship between high-achieving students upon finalizing compulsory education and their subsequent academic achievement (e.g., shortage of STEM university students), and labor, or the region’s economic development (e.g., entrepreneurship rates, innovation effort, productivity).
  • A possible conflict between promoting high performance and ensuring equitable educational opportunities.
