Energy Transition in Spain: Progress, European Positioning, and Regional Perspectives
This project aims to assess Spain’s energy transition through a set of key dimensions: the evolution of greenhouse gas emissions, the deployment of renewable energy sources, the electrification of the economy, and energy efficiency. The analysis is designed to measure the pace of progress in these areas, place it within the context of European climate and energy commitments, and highlight the territorial disparities that exist across Spain.
Within this framework, the report seeks to provide a structured overview of the progress of the energy transition in Spain, its relative position within Europe, and the extent of regional heterogeneity. It also develops a concise empirical framework to help interpret the degree of progress achieved and to support the design, implementation, and monitoring of public policies at both the national and regional levels.
Finally, the study identifies the specific challenges and distinct opportunities faced by different territories in meeting decarbonization and climate neutrality objectives.
