This study analyzes the impact of the crisis on the Spanish banking sector and examines the recent evolution of Spanish credit institutions in comparison with other European countries. It examines aspects such as profitability, efficiency, solvency, indebtedness, specialization, the non-performing loans ratio and the sector’s strong pace of activity. It also assesses the different measures taken to deal with the crisis, as well as the challenges facing the Spanish banking sector at the publication of this report. The research focuses on the years of higher growth in the banking business, from 2000 to the onset of the international crisis in summer 2007, until 2010.
