Mercadona achieved a turnover of 22,860 million euros in 2018, accounting for 1.9% of Spain’s GDP

The activity generated by Mercadona contributed 8,852 million euros in taxes, 2.1% of the total obtained by the Public Administration

The total economic impact of Mercadona in 2018, taking into account the indirect and induced impacts generated through its production chain (via purchases made to its suppliers, and these in turn to theirs and so on), is estimated at 22,860 million euros of income, which represents 1,9% of Spain’s GDP, and generates a total of 629,186 full-time jobs, equivalent to 3,4% of the country’s total employment, according to the impact analysis report carried out by the Ivie.

According to the figures, for another year running Mercadona is a key driver of growth in the Spanish economy. Thus, every euro of income generated by Mercadona’s supermarkets, as wages, profits and rents, results in 5.1 euros for the Spanish economy. In addition, for every job created by Mercadona, 7.4 jobs are created in the Spanish economy. The service sector is the most benefited by the impacts produced by the supermarket chain, concentrating 75% of GDP and 73% of employment, followed by the agro-food industry which represents 15% of GDP and 19% of employment.

Fiscal impact

The report, carried out by Ivie’s Research Deputy Director, Joaquín Maudos, also includes an analysis of Mercadona’s fiscal contributions by means of taxes and Social Security, which reached 8,852 million euros in 2018, 2.1% of the total taxes obtained by the Spanish Public Administration.
