The economic cycle and overqualification: impact of the current crisis
Year of publication: 2009
Number: 104
Abstract
The 2008 Observatory of Young people's Transition to the labour market has estimated the probability of overqualification increasing or decreasing over time in relation to the characteristics of young people (for example, being female or male). According to the findings of the study, graduates are more likely to be overqualified than young people with compulsory secondary education. In terms of sectors, retail and hospitality have a higher proportion of overqualified young people than other services, while in education and health there is less likelihood of this occurring. Results also show that young people who are self-employed or who have a permanent contract are less likely to be overqualified than those with a temporary contract, and that the year of entry into the labor market affects the likelihood of overqualification. The issue also takes into consideration that the economic crisis that began in 2008 may mean the beginning of a productive change in the composition of Spain's economy. And this in turn can have a significant impact on the job placement process and, particularly, on overqualification.
