This study examines the evolution of productivity in a wide range of developed countries from an international perspective, focusing on a detailed industry level and an extensive temporal coverage. The aim is to explain why productivity has advanced slowly in the majority of European countries over recent years —including Spain— while the opposite is the case for the USA. In order to be able to perform such analyses, the database was used from the EU KLEMS project, financed by the European Commission as part of the 6th Framework Programme, in which the Ivie was the Spanish representative.
The methodology used is growth accounting. The variables value added, gross output and intermediate inputs are analyzed, as well as the two factors of production: work and capital. In the latter, there is a distinction between ICT capital and non ICT capital. The period covered is 1970-2005.
