Mercadona's economic impact on GDP grew by 6% in 2019 to 24,233 million euros
Every euro of income generated by Mercadona's supermarkets, as wages, profits and rents, results in 5 euros for the Spanish economy
The total economic impact of Mercadona in 2019, taking into account the indirect and induced impacts, is estimated at 24,233 million euros of income, which represents 1,95% of Spain’s GDP. This figure represents a 6% increase in comparison to 2018, as shown in the recent impact analysis report carried out by the Ivie. In addition, its activity generates a total of 655,259 full-time jobs, equivalent to 3,57% of the country’s total employment. The service sector is the most benefited by the impacts produced by the supermarket chain, concentrating 75% of GDP and 73% of employment, followed by the agro-food industry which represents 15% of GDP and 19% of employment.
The report also estimates the impact on tax collection due to Mercadona’s activity, which reached 8.643 million euros in 2019, 2% of the total taxes obtained by the Spanish Public Administration. This figure is divided between the tax contribution borne and collected directly by Mercadona, which makes a total of 1,585 million euros, and the amounts generated as a result of the indirect and induced impact are quantified at 5,320 and 1,738 million, respectively.
According to the report, every euro of income generated by Mercadona’s supermarkets, as wages, profits and rents, results in 5 euros for the Spanish economy and for every job created by Mercadona, 7.4 jobs are created in the Spanish economy. Also, regarding fiscal impact, each euro effectively supported by Mercadona ends up becoming 8.7 euros collected by the different levels of the Public Administrations.
