Current European agriculture has achieved high levels of productivity, but at the same time it has generated important negative environmental externalities. The European Green Deal establishes objectives for the agricultural sector that should contribute to improving its environmental performance and mitigating climate change, but can cause a reduction in yields and an increase in food prices. The answer must come from the incorporation of knowledge into the sector through sustainable technologies, but questions arise derived from the difficulties of the European authorities in regulating advances in biotechnology and because of the limitations that European agricultural structures present for the rapid reception and incorporation of the innovations.
