The Conference, in which Ivie Researchers took part, was organized this year by the University of Verona

Verona, the city of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, was the meeting point for the 3-day debate on banking and finance. The 28th edition of the Wolpertinger Conference, held in this famous Italian city from August 31st to September 2nd, gathered over 150 banking and finance experts and academics who presented their studies on the latest developments in this sector.

Today’s credit conditions, the new risks banks face, bank customer fees or the situation of the European financial markets were some issues discussed at the 2016 Wolpertinger Conference. Additionally, Steven Ongena, Professor of the University of Zurich and member of the Swiss Finance Institute and CEPR, participated as guest scholar. Other keynote speakers were Lucrezia Reichilin (London Business School) and Giorgio Gobbi (Bank of Italy)..

Ivie Researchers, Joaquín Maudos and Juan Fernández de Guevara, along with Paula Cruz, presented their paper ‘Determinants of bank’s interest margins in the aftermath of the crisis: the effect of interest rates and the yield curve slope’. Also, Santiago Carbo, Professor at Bangor University and Ivie Researcher, offered his analysis on ‘The Pricing of Financial Products in Retail Banking: Competition, Geographic Proximity and Credit Limits and Underwriting as Certification of Bank Bonds’.

The annual Wolpertinger Conference is organized by the Wolpertinger Club, an international association of university teachers with a common interest in the economics of financial systems and institutions. The objectives of these meetings, celebrated once a year since 1987, are to share and discuss new research, exchange ideas and develop ways to co-operate in the research and teaching of banking, financial institutions and the economics of financial systems.
