Spanish regions with low OECD PISA results in mathematics also score low in digital skills and competence
There is a strong link between the indicators that measure the digital skills and competence of students, companies and the total population. In general, the Spanish regions with the highest OECD PISA scores in mathematics also have a higher percentage of graduates in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields, a greater number of firms with ICT specialists or that provide ICT training to their employees, and a higher number of people with at least basic computer skills. Madrid and Catalonia are the Spanish regions with the best results in ICT use and digital skills of the population, while the regions of southern Spain, along with Castile-La Mancha and the Canary Islands, have lower scores. To fully benefit from digitization, it is essential to develop and enhance the digital skills of the workforce and population in general and to reduce the digital gap.
