Mercadona achieved a turnover of more than 27,000 million euros, 2.05% of Spain’s GDP
The impact of the supermarket’s activity on tax collection resulted in payments totaling 9,858 million euros, 9.4% more than in 2021
According to the economic impact report developed by the Ivie’s Deputy Director, Joaquín Maudos, together with economists Eva Benages and Carlos Albert, Mercadona’s total contribution to the Spanish economy in 2022, which includes the impacts derived from operating costs (purchases made to its suppliers, contracted services, wages and salaries and rents) and investments made by the supermarket chain, increased 8.2% compared to the previous year, amounting to 27,246 million euros of income, a figure equivalent to 2.05% of Spain’s GDP.
The study also offers data on the effects of Mercadona on employment. Specifically, the supermarket chain’s activity in 2022 generated and/or maintained 684,211 full-time jobs, which is equal to 3.59% of the country’s total employment.
According to the distribution of economic impact by industry sectors, the services sector accounts for the largest share (74% of the total impact in terms of income and employment), followed by the agri-food industry (generating 16.27% of income and 19.29% of employment). Within services, the commerce sector stands out (32.8 % of income and 34.5 % of total employment), while in the industry sector, the main sector that benefitted the most from Mercadona’s activity is the food industry (around 9.3 % of income and 8.3 % of employment).
Finally, the report takes into account Mercadona’s tax contributions, which resulted in the payment of 9,858 million euros (9.4% more than in 2021). Of this amount, the tax contribution borne and collected by Mercadona amounts to 2,170 million euros, of which 1,215 million are taxes borne by the company. The remaining public income contribution (7,688 million euros) comes from indirect and induced impacts that total 5,916 and 1,772 million euros, respectively. The largest portion of fiscal impact, 35% (3,472 million euros), is attributable to Social Security contributions. Thus, for each euro effectively borne by Mercadona, 8.1 euros are collected by the various levels of the Spanish Public Administration.
