Abstract
The discussion about the future of the financial system is mostly centered on the competition of new digital banks and large technological companies. However, the introduction of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) can also have large impact on banking business models. During the pandemic there has been a cybersprint among central banks to propose designs for CBDCs in front of the accelerated introduction of cryptocurrencies and the increase in cashless transactions. In this article we present an analysis of alternative designs of CBDCs and their potential impact on the future of the financial system
