65.1% of Spanish youths aged 16-34 years still live at home with their parents

The percentage of young people aged 16-34 years who still live at home with their parents has risen from 58.1% in 2008 to 65.1% in 2018. Factors that influence the decision to leave the family home are the young person’s education level, the labor market, access to housing, and certain cultural factors. Just under two thirds (62%) of young people with a permanent job contract have achieved independence, compared to just over a third (36.8%) with a temporary contract. Young people who are still in formal education also delay departure from the family home, as only 8% of these young people live independently. Finally, another influencing factor is the high cost of housing. In 2017 almost 60% of young people living independently were renting or living in a family-owned home, whereas, in 2008 60.5% of young people owned their own home.
