This study aims to analyze systematically the various ways of approaching the measurement of inequality in the distribution of income and their application to welfare assessment. The research is based on a detailed study of inequality indexes and pays special attention to the different ways of decomposing indexes, which allows dealing with the study of the origin and nature of inequality. One of the distinctive elements of this publication is the effort to integrate the analysis of inequality in the broader context of welfare assessment.
