Spain’s total population has increased by 15.4% since 2000, while decreasing in over 60% of its municipalities and 13 provinces

Although Spain’s total population has increased by 15.4% since 2000, it actually has decreased in 63.1% of its municipalities and 13 provinces, making depopulation ever more frequent in Spain. In fact, in 2018 half of Spain’s provinces lost residents over the previous year. This phenomenon has been especially significant in rural areas with 1,000 or less inhabitants, currently accounting for 3.1% of Spain’s total population. On the other hand, nearly 80% of Spain’s population lives in municipalities with more than 10,000 inhabitants. By provinces, Guadalajara stands out with 53.8% more inhabitants than in 2000, followed by Almeria, Girona, Balearic and Tarragona.
