The number of long-term unemployed account for 44.3% of the unemployed in Spain, while differences among regions have almost doubled during the recovery period
The number of people in Spain who have been unemployed for 12 months or more increased during the financial crisis, reaching a level of 61.8% over the total unemployment rate. Although this rate decreased to 44.3% in 2019, over 30% remain jobless for two years or more, a situation affecting especially those over the age of 50. Moreover, regional differences have nearly doubled during the financial recovery years. For example, in 2019 the difference between the region with the highest long-term unemployment rate (Asturias, 54.7%) and the lowest (Balearic Islands, 26.3%) was 28.4 points, compared to 15.9% in 2013.
