Women represent 54% of the students enrolled in the Valencian public universities and 56% of young teachers (aged 30-35)

Female students enrolled in bachelor’s and master’s degrees outnumber their male peers, while gender equality exists among PhD degree students

The Valencian public universities have 125,236 students enrolled for the 2017/2018 academic year, of which 67,697 are women (54%). Women outnumber the amount of men enrolled in both bachelor’s and master’s degrees, with a percentage of 55% and 53% over the total, respectively. However, gender parity exists among PhD students, with 4,254 male and 4,255 female students.

The strong presence of women is also noticeable among the administrative and services staff members, being 59.5% women. Still, gender equality does not exist in the case of teaching and research staff, in which women represent 40% of the total number of teachers in the Valencian universities, as compared to men that make up 60%.

However, data by age groups provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (SIIU) shows that during the last years, the teaching staff is approaching equality in regards to gender. While female teachers over the age of 60 represent approximately 24% of the total number of teachers within that age, the percentage of female teachers between the ages of 30-35 and 35-40 is 56% and 50%, respectively, over total teachers in that age group. This data reveals that women are progressively entering the teaching profession and that the university is becoming more egalitarian in this field.

The SIUVP website, which gathers information on the Valencian public universities, has updated its indicators, disaggregating, for the first time, the number of students, teachers and administrative staff by gender. In addition, the web has updated 11 of its indicators that offer data on internationalization, human resources and research and transfer (patents and bibliometric analysis).

The information contained in the SIUVP database is a result of the joint work of the Valencian public universities and the Ivie, ranging from academic issues related to supply and demand of degrees, to more specific data on resources and economic results of each university’s activity. The website includes information on the Valencian Public University System which is composed of five universities: University of Valencia, Alicante University, Polytechnic University of Valencia, Jaume I University and Miguel Hernández University at Elche.
